Hand Anatomy, Gender Differences, ROC Curve Values and Regression Formulas in Young Adults

SİNAN BAKIRCI | Kübra ERDOĞAN

Objective: In this study, our aim was to obtain the cut-off values with the “Receiver Operator Characteristic (ROC)” for estimating gender from the hand sizes of young adult female and male individuals, and also to create logistic regression equations. Material and Method: This study was carried out on 64 healthy young adult volunteers (29 males, 35 females) aged 18-22 years. Hand photos of the volunteers were taken using the Canon 800D camera. Hand length and hand breadth were measured with the “Image J” program. A total of 256 measurements were carried out. Results: Right hand mean length (i ...Daha fazlası

Effects of demineralizaton-inhibition procedures on the bond strength of brackets bonded to demineralized enamel surface

TANCAN UYSAL

Objective: To study and compare the effects of different demineralizationinhibition methods on the shear bond strength (SBS) and fracture mode of an adhesive used to bond orthodontic brackets to demineralized enamel surfaces. Methods: Eighty freshly extracted, human maxillary premolars were divided into 4 equal groups and demineralized over the course of 21 days. Brackets were bonded to the demineralized enamel of teeth in Group 1. In Group 2, bonding was performed following resin infi ltration (ICON®, DMG, Hamburg, Germany). Before bonding, pre-treatment with acidulated phosphate fluor ...Daha fazlası

Assessment of trace metal contamination in the sea cucumber (Holothuria tubulosa) and sediments from the Dardanelles Strait (Turkey)

SANİYE TÜRK ÇULHA | HAKKI DERELİ | MEHMET ÇULHA

This study was performed to determine the concentrations of some trace metals (Cd, Cu, Pb, Ni, Zn, and Fe) in Holothuria tubuosa (Gmelin, 1788) belonging to Echinoderm species and in sediments that they live at three different stations (Gelibolu, Umur Bey/Lapseki, and Dardanos) on Dardanelles Strait between April 2013 and March 2014. The mean trace metal concentrations determined in H. tubulosa and sediment were as follows: Cd 0.18 mg/kg, Cu 2.43 mg/ kg, Pb 2.09 mg/kg, Ni 14.58 mg/kg, Zn 16.86 mg/kg, and Fe 73.46 mg/kg and Cd 0.70 mg/kg, Cu 5.03 mg/kg, Pb 14.57 mg/kg, Ni 27.15 mg/kg, ...Daha fazlası

Comparison of three different orthodontic wires for bonded lingual retainer fabrication

ASLI BAYSAL |

Objective We evaluated the detachment force, amount of deformation, fracture mode, and pull-out force of 3 different wires used for bonded lingual retainer fabrication. Methods We tested 0.0215-inch five-stranded wire (PentaOne, Masel; group I), 0.016 × 0.022-inch dead-soft eight-braided wire (Bond-A-Braid, Reliance; group II), and 0.0195-inch dead-soft coaxial wire (Respond, Ormco; group III). To test detachment force, deformation, and fracture mode, we embedded 94 lower incisor teeth in acrylic blocks in pairs. Retainer wires were bonded to the teeth and vertically directed force was ap ...Daha fazlası

Heavy metals in tissues of scorpionfish (Scorpaena porcus) caught from Black Sea (Turkey) and potential risks to human health

SANİYE TÜRK ÇULHA

Scorpionfish (Scorpaena porcus) is a demersal fish species commercially important for its of which meat is tough and delicious. The aim of this study was to determine heavy metal (Al, Cu, Ni, As, Cd, Hg, Pb, U) concentrations in this fish species which is traditionally consumed in the Black Sea Area and, to compare the concentrations of various toxic elements in different organs of the fish specimens (muscle, liver, gill, and skin). Within this scope, the mineralization was performed using microwave digestion system. Thirty-two scor pionfish caught from Sinop Inland Port during 2010 w ...Daha fazlası

Dehiscence and fenestration in patients with different vertical growth patterns assessed with cone-beam computed tomography

İLKNUR VELİ | ŞÜKRÜ ENHOŞ

Objective: To test the null hypothesis that the presence of alveolar defects (dehiscence and fenestration) was not different among patients with different vertical growth patterns. Materials and Methods: A total of 1872 teeth in 26 hyper-divergent (mean age: 24.4 6 4.8 years), 27 hypo-divergent (mean age: 25.1 6 4.5 years), and 25 normo-divergent (mean age: 23.6 6 4.1 years) patients with no previous orthodontic treatment were evaluated using cone-beam computed tomography. Axial and cross-sectional views were evaluated with regard to whether dehiscence and/or fenestration on buccal and l ...Daha fazlası

Ethnic differences in the soft tissue profiles of Turkish and European–American young adults with normal occlusions and well-balanced faces

ASLI BAYSAL | TANCAN UYSAL

The aim of this study was to evaluate soft tissue differences between Turkish and North American adults by comparing two sample populations with ideal occlusion and well-balanced faces. Lateral cephalometric radiographs of 117 Anatolian Turkish adults (65 female and 52 male, mean age: 23.9 ± 2.8 years) were compared with a sample of 116 adults of European–American ancestry (64 female and 52 male, mean age: 25.0 ± 6.8 years). The cephalometric analyses of Holdaway, Epker, and Legan and Burstone were performed using Dolphin Image Software 9.0. Thirty-two measurements (27 linear and 5 angular) we ...Daha fazlası

Comparison of Adverse Effects of BioNTech mRNA and Sinovac Vaccines in Adults in Turkey

SEVİL YILMAZ | PERİHAN ÇETİN

Objective: The aim of this study is to compare the side effects of Pfizer-BioNTech mRNA and Sinovac-CoronaVac vaccines administered in adults in Turkey. Material and Method: This is a cross-sectional study. The study sample consisted of 187 adults, 95 in the Pfizer-BioNTech group and 92 in the Sinovac-CoronaVac group, who came for vaccination. A Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) and a questionnaire were applied to vaccinated individuals in a hospital. They were asked about any adverse effects at 6, 12 and 24 hours post-vaccination. Results: The most common local adverse effect was pain at the inject ...Daha fazlası

OPG and RANKL levels around miniscrew implants during orthodontic tooth movement

İLKNUR VELİ | ŞÜKRÜ ENHOŞ

Introduction: The aim of this study was to determine the peri-miniscrew implant crevicular fluid receptor activator of nuclear factor-lB ligand (RANKL) and osteoprotegerin (OPG) levels around loaded and unloaded miniscrew implants at different time intervals. Methods: Twenty loaded and 16 unloaded miniscrew implants were included in this study. All miniscrew implants were placed bilaterally between the maxillary second premolars and first molars as anchorage units for canine distalization. Peri-miniscrew implant crevicular fluid was taken from the mesiobuccal aspects of the loaded and unl ...Daha fazlası

A Systematic Review on Intragastric Balloons and TransPyloric Shuttle in Obesity Treatment

Endoscopic bariatric procedures in the treatment of obesity have become widespread in recent years. In this systematic review, it was aimed to assess the role of intragastric balloons and transpyloric shuttle in the treatment of obesity. A comprehensive search was conducted using the search terms “Intragastric Balloon” and “TransPyloric Shuttle” in PubMed, Cochrane Library and Web of Science databases from 1st of December to 25th of December in 2020. Twenty-seven clinical studies (24 studies on intragastric balloons and 3 studies on transpyloric shuttle) were assessed. It is clear that both me ...Daha fazlası
