EBRU KÜÇÜKYILMAZ | | | |

Makale | 2013 | Wolters Kluwer Health

This in vitro study was to evaluate the erosive potential of four soft drinks at different times on bovine teeth by profilometry. Bovine incisors buccal side was sectioned with a diamond saw and a total of 100 enamel blocks were prepared (8 × 4 × 0.5 mm). Five specimens each were exposed to 60 ml of soft drinks (Sprite, Coca Cola, Cappy-orange and Ayran) for 15, 30, 60, 120 and 180 minutes in a continuously vibrating soft drinks bath in a beaker at room temperature. Surface loss of the specimens was determined with a profilometry. The data were analyzed by two-way analysis of variance and Tukey HSD test. Loss of enamel was observed . . .in Coca Cola, Cappy and Sprite groups. Coca Cola was significantly higher erosive potential in 180 minutes than other soft drinks (p < 0.05). Ayran was no sign of erosive potential in all time. It can be concluded that the composition of the beverages had a significant effect on dental erosion, so consumption of Ayran can be advised Daha fazlası Daha az

Ethnic differences in the soft tissue profiles of Turkish and European–American young adults with normal occlusions and well-balanced faces

ASLI BAYSAL | TANCAN UYSAL

Makale | 2012 | Oxford University Press on behalf of the European Orthodontic Society

The aim of this study was to evaluate soft tissue differences between Turkish and North American adults by comparing two sample populations with ideal occlusion and well-balanced faces. Lateral cephalometric radiographs of 117 Anatolian Turkish adults (65 female and 52 male, mean age: 23.9 ± 2.8 years) were compared with a sample of 116 adults of European–American ancestry (64 female and 52 male, mean age: 25.0 ± 6.8 years). The cephalometric analyses of Holdaway, Epker, and Legan and Burstone were performed using Dolphin Image Software 9.0. Thirty-two measurements (27 linear and 5 angular) were analysed. For statistical evaluation, . . . independent samples t-tests were performed. Distinct differences were found between the two samples in facial convexity, upper lip position and length, lower lip position, chin prominence, and chin thickness. Vertical proportional findings were similar between groups. Ethnic differences were found between Turkish and North American adults in the soft tissue profile. It is appropriate to consider these differences during routine diagnosis and treatment planning of a Turkish patient or an American patient of European ancestry Daha fazlası Daha az

Mandibular asymmetry in unilateral and bilateral posterior crossbite patients using cone-beam computed tomography

Makale | 2011 | The E. H. Angle Education and Research Foundation

Objective: To test the hypotheses that (1) there is no difference in mandibular asymmetry between the crossbite and normal side in a unilateral crossbite group (UCG) and between the right and left sides in a bilateral crossbite group (BCG) and a control group (CG); and (2) there is no significant difference in mandibular asymmetry among crossbite groups and control group. Materials and Methods: The cone-beam computed tomography scans of three groups were studied: (1) 15 patients (6 male, 9 female; mean age: 13.51 6 2.03 years) with unilateral posterior crossbite; (2) 15 patients (8 male, 7 female; mean age: 13.36 6 2.12 years) . . . with bilateral posterior crossbite; and (3) 15 patients (8 male, 7 female; mean age: 13.46 6 1.53 years) as a control group. Fourteen parameters (eight linear, three surface, and three volumetric) were measured. Side comparisons were analyzed with paired samples t-test, and for the intergroup comparison, analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey tests were used at the P , .05 level. Results: According to side comparisons, no statistically significant difference was found in the UCG. There were statistically significant differences in hemimandibular (P 5 .008) and ramal (P 5 .004) volumes for the BCG and in ramal height (P 5 .024) and body length (P 5 .021) for the CG. Intergroup comparisons revealed significant differences in hemimandibular (P 5 .002) and body volume (P , .001) for the normal side of the UCG and left sides of the other groups, and in angular unit length (P 5 .025) and condylar width (P 5 .007) for the crossbite side of the UCG and the right sides of the other groups. Conclusions: Contrary to UCG, CG and BCG were found to have side-specific asymmetry. Skeletal components of the mandible have significant asymmetry among the crossbite groups and the CG Daha fazlası Daha az

İLKNUR VELİ | ŞÜKRÜ ENHOŞ

Makale | 2013 | American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics

Introduction: The aim of this study was to determine the peri-miniscrew implant crevicular fluid receptor activator of nuclear factor-lB ligand (RANKL) and osteoprotegerin (OPG) levels around loaded and unloaded miniscrew implants at different time intervals. Methods: Twenty loaded and 16 unloaded miniscrew implants were included in this study. All miniscrew implants were placed bilaterally between the maxillary second premolars and first molars as anchorage units for canine distalization. Peri-miniscrew implant crevicular fluid was taken from the mesiobuccal aspects of the loaded and unloaded miniscrew implants before loading; . . . at 24, 48, and 168 hours; and on day 30 after force application. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay kits were used to determine RANKL and OPG levels in the peri-miniscrew implant crevicular fluid samples. Wilcoxon, Mann-Whitney U, and Spearman correlation tests were used for statistical evaluations at the P\0.05 level. Results: Although the total amount of OPG was not different between the groups, the total amount of RANKL was significantly elevated in the loaded miniscrew implant group (P\0.05) at all time periods. Peri-miniscrew implant crevicular fluid volume was the highest at 48 hours in the loaded group. Also, the OPG/RANKL ratio in the peri-miniscrew implant crevicular fluid was significantly decreased in the loaded miniscrew implant group. Conclusions: The OPG and RANKL levels vary around loaded and unloaded miniscrew implants as a result of force application Daha fazlası Daha az

Makale | 2009 | Selçuk Üniversitesi Diş Hekimliği Fakültesi

Ehlers Danlos Syndrome (EDS) is a connective tissue disease that has effect on the structure and function of collagen. Collagen is a fibrous protein that is one of the main building structures of connective tissues such as skin, tendon, bone and cartilage. Connective tissue requires all type of collagen to function correctly. People with EDS may show symptoms such as skin hyperelasticity, joint hypermobility, increased tendency to bruise and abnormal scarring. Dental findings have been reported with some types of EDS. This case report describes the dental findings of a patient (10, c?) who applied to Selçuk University Department . . .of Pediatric Dentistry with dental caries and mobility. According to his medical history he was born at month 7 of the pregnancy. He had a history of easy bruising and scarring after minimal trauma and presented a soft and hyperextensible skin. In addition, he had atrophic paper scars on the face, elbows, knees and shins; hypertelorizm on the face, ecchymosis on the lower legs and generalized joint laxity. Intraoral examination revealed pigmentation at gingival tissues, mobility at mandibular lateral and central incisors and supernumerary teeth in the area of left maxilla. Based on these findings the patient’s profile was consistent with classical type EDS. In this report a case with EDS is presented and also the clinical approach to his dental problems is emphasized Daha fazlası Daha az

TANCAN UYSAL

Makale | 2011 | Elsevier

Objectives: The aims of the present study were (1) to determine ethnic differences in craniofacial dimensions between Turkish and Saudi populations and (2) to identify possible gender differences between males and females, based on a sample of untreated young adult subjects with normal occlusions and well-balanced faces. Methods: In total, 163 cephalometric radiographs were traced and evaluated to compare untreated adults of Turkish and Saudi ethnicity. The Turkish group comprised 86 subjects; 45 females and 41 males. The Saudi group comprised 77 subjects; 39 females and 38 males. For statistical evaluation, an independent-sa . . .mples t-test was performed. Results: The Turkish sample had a more retrognathic maxilla and mandible (p< 0.001 for SNA and SNB) and a more vertical direction of facial development (p< 0.001), with Turkish males having more retrusive lips (p< 0.001). Distinctive ethnic differences were found in craniofacial structures between Turkish and Saudi young adults. Conclusions: It is appropriate to consider these aesthetic differences when a Turkish or a Saudi patient is being evaluated during routine diagnosis and treatment planning Daha fazlası Daha az

Makale | 2013 | The Korean Association of Orthodontists

Objective: To evaluate the changes in cortical bone thickness, alveolar bone height, and the incidence of dehiscence and fenestration in the surrounding alveolar bone of posterior teeth after rapid maxillary expansion (RME) treatment using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). Methods: The CBCT records of 20 subjects (9 boys, mean age: 13.97 ± 1.17 years; 11 girls, mean age: 13.53 ± 2.12 year) that underwent RME were selected from the archives. CBCT scans had been taken before (T1) and after (T2) the RME. Moreover, 10 of the subjects had 6-month retention (T3) records. We used the CBCT data to evaluate the buccal and . . . palatal aspects of the canines, first and second premolars, and the first molars at 3 vertical levels. The cortical bone thickness and alveolar bone height at T1 and T2 were evaluated with the paired-samples t-test or the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. Repeated measure ANOVA or the Friedman test was used to evaluate the statistical significance at T1, T2, and T3. Statistical significance was set at p < 0.05. Results: The buccal cortical bone thickness decreased gradually from baseline to the end of the retention period. After expansion, the buccal alveolar bone height was reduced significantly; however, this change was not statistically significant after the 6-month retention period. During the course of the treatment, the incidence of dehiscence and fenestration increased and decreased, respectively. Conclusions: RME may have detrimental effects on the supporting alveolar bone, since the thickness and height of the buccal alveolar bone decreased during the retention period Daha fazlası Daha az

. .mına uygun değildi. Kısa süreli ortodontik tedavi ile köprü yapımı planlanan boşluk kısmen yeterli hale getirildi. Kompozit materyalden hazırlanan köprü gövdesi mevcut boşluğa, fiber ile güçlendirilmiş kompozit rezin materyal yardımıyla sabittendi. Hastanın 24 ay sonraki kontrolünde herhangi bir sorunun olmadığı görüldü. Minimal invaziv yaklaşımla uygulanan fiber ile güçlendirilmiş kompozit rezin köprülerin, gelişim dönemindeki hastalar için estetik, fonksiyon ve fonasyon kayıplarının düzeltilmesinde kullanılan ekonomik bir tedavi seçeneği olduğunu düşünmekteyiz. Different treatment alternatives are considered for the rehabilitation of congenitally or traumatically missing permanent incisors in young children and adolescents. The purpose of this case report is to present an example of polyethylene fiber-reinforced composite resin bonded bridge. A 12-year-old girl, was referred to our clinic with complaints regarding aesthetics. The screening procedure revealed congenitally missing lower central incisors short term orthodontic treatment provided the necessary space for prothetic restoration was relatively opened to a built bridge. Fiber reinforced composite resin material was used to bond the composite bridge restoring the created space. Follow-up examination after 24 months, revealed stability with the absence of problems.
