‘I’m not a Schizophrenic!’ Qualitative Research on the Life Stories of Women Diagnosed with Schizophrenia and Bipolar Disorder

Objective: Making the life stories of women diagnosed with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder visible with a feminist social work approach. Material and Methods: In this study, narrative research with qualitative research method was used. In-depth semi-structured interviews were conducted with 12 women who were selected according to the purposive sampling method. The data were analyzed using thematic content analysis method and the MAXQDA 20 program. These themes are especially the pre-diagnosis, diagnosis, and post-diagnosis experiences of women regarding their disease. In addiction to these themes, women’s future expectations and recommendations were also analyzed. Conclusion: When the life stories of women were analyzed, it was seen that they have been systematically exposed to the pressures of the patriarchal system from childhood to present. Gender-based role expectations, which started first in the family, continued increasingly in their married life. After being diagnosed with the disease, they selfstigmatized by isolating themselves from their social circles and had difficulties in participating in public life. Engelli Çocuğa Sahip Kadınların COVID-19 Sürecindeki Deneyimleri: Nitel Bir Araştırma

ÖZ Amaç: Engelli çocuğa sahip kadınların COVID-19 sürecinde yaşadıkları sorunları ve yaşam deneyimlerinin feminist sosyal hizmet bağlamında fenomenolojik yaklaşım ile ortaya çıkarılması amaçlanmaktadır. Gereç ve Yöntem: Kadınların engelli çocuklarına bakım konusunda COVID-19 pandemisinde yaşadıkları deneyimlerini feminist sosyal hizmet bağlamında derinlemesine incelemek amacıyla araştırmada nitel araştırma yöntemlerinden fenomenolojik yaklaşım kullanıldı. Katılımcılar nitel araştırmalarda kullanılan amaçlı örnekleme kapsamında kartopu yöntemi ile belirlendi. Veriler MAXQDA20 programı ile nitel içerik analizi ile analiz edildi. . . .Bulgular: Araştırmanın sonucunda iki ana tema belirlendi. Bunlar: “COVID-19 sürecinde yaşanan sorunlar ve değişimler”, “COVID-19 sürecinde ihtiyaçlar ve öneriler” şeklindedir. Kadınlar bu süreçte bakım yükü, ev içi sorumluluklar, güce karşı güçsüzlük ve artan gelecek kaygısı yaşamaktadırlar. Ayrıca hem engelli çocuklarına hem de kendi ihtiyaçlarına yönelik talepte bulunmakta ve öneri getirmektedirler. Engelli çocuğa sahip kadınların COVID-19 pandemisindeki deneyimleri incelendiğinde sistematik olarak kadınların çocukların tüm bakım yüklerini üstlendiği, bu nedenle COVID-19 sürecinde oldukça yıprandıkları ve zorlandıkları görüldü. COVID-19 pandemisi başladıktan sonra kadınların kendilerine vakit ayıramadıkları, sosyal çevrelerinden tamamen uzaklaştıkları ve destek sistemlerine ulaşamadıkları ortaya çıktı. Sonuç: Konuya ilişkin yeni çalışmaların yapılması ve kadınların desteklenmesi gerekmektedir. Dolayısıyla özellikle Türkiye gibi gelişmekte olan ülkelerde insan hakları ve sosyal adalet ilkelerinin gözetilerek bu konunun daha fazla irdelenerek, kadının güçlenmesine, destek sistemlerinin arttırılmasına ve bunun için çeşitli düzeyde sosyal hizmet uygulamasına ihtiyaç bulunmaktadır. ABSTRACT Objective: It is aimed to reveal the problems and life experiences of women with disabled children during the COVID-19 pandemic with a phenomenological approach in the context of feminist social work. Material and Method: Qualitative research method was used in the research in order to examine women’s experiences in caring for their disabled children during the COVID-19 pandemic in the context of feminist social work. In this context phenomenological approach was used in the context of qualitative research method. Participants were determined by the snowball method within the scope of purposive sampling used in qualitative research. The data were analyzed by content analysis with the MAXQDA20 program. Results: As a result of the research, two main themes were determined. These are: "Problems and changes in the COVID-19 process", "Needs and suggestions in the COVID-19 process". In this process, women experience the burden of care, domestic responsibilities, powerlessness to power and increasing anxiety about the future. In addition, they make requests and offer suggestions for both their children with disabilities and their own needs. The experiences of women with disabled children during the COVID-19 pandemic were examined, it was seen that women systematically assumed all the care burdens of children, therefore they were quite burn out and had difficulties in the COVID-19 pandemic. It turned out that after start of the COVID-19 pandemic, women could not spare time for themselves, completely distances themselves from their Social environment and could not reach support systems. Conclusion: It is necessary to carry out new studies on the subject and to support women.
