Bugünkü Bulgaristan’ın kuzeybatı kısmında Tuna nehrinin güney kıyısında yer alan Vidin, Roma döneminden itibaren bir kale ve liman kentidir. Keltlerin kurduğu Dunonia adlı yerleşim biriminin üzerinde kurulmuştur. Dunonia, Romalılar tarafından Bononia şeklinde adlandırılmaya başlanmıştır. Tuna Bulgar Devleti ve II. Bulgar Krallığı döneminde Bdin olarak adlandırılmıştır. 1277 yılında Vidin merkez olmak üzere Vidin Prensliği kurulmuştur. Prensliğin kurucusu olarak Kuman asıllı Şişman kabul edilmektedir.
