Ethnic differences in the soft tissue profiles of Turkish and European–American young adults with normal occlusions and well-balanced faces

ASLI BAYSAL | TANCAN UYSAL

The aim of this study was to evaluate soft tissue differences between Turkish and North American adults by comparing two sample populations with ideal occlusion and well-balanced faces. Lateral cephalometric radiographs of 117 Anatolian Turkish adults (65 female and 52 male, mean age: 23.9 ± 2.8 years) were compared with a sample of 116 adults of European–American ancestry (64 female and 52 male, mean age: 25.0 ± 6.8 years). The cephalometric analyses of Holdaway, Epker, and Legan and Burstone were performed using Dolphin Image Software 9.0. Thirty-two measurements (27 linear and 5 angular) we ...Daha fazlası

Mandibular anterior bony support and incisor crowding: Is there a relationship?

İLKNUR VELİ

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to test the null hypothesis that increased irregularity of the mandibular incisors is associated with a reduction in the alveolar support on cone-beam computed tomographic sections. METHODS: From a sample of 1100 digital volumetric tomographs, 125 tomographs of subjects with Class I malocclusion (mean age, 21.6 ± 4.8 years) were selected for this study. An irregularity index was used to categorize these tomographs as having mild, moderate, or severe crowding. All tomographs were taken by using an iCAT (Imaging Sciences International, Hatfield, Pa) ima ...Daha fazlası

Effect of LED-mediatedphotobiomodulation therapy on orthodontic tooth movement and root resorption in rats

TANCAN UYSAL

The aim of this experimental study was to evaluate the effects of light-emitting diode-mediated-photobiomodulation therapy (LPT), on the rate of orthodontic tooth movement (TM) and orthodontically induced root resorption, in rats. Twentymale 12-week-oldWistar rats were separated into two groups (control and LPT) and 50 cN of force was applied between maxillary left molar and incisor with a coil spring. In the treatment group, LPT was applied with an energy density of 20 mW/cm2 over a period of 10 consecutive days directly over the movement of the first molar teeth area. The distance b ...Daha fazlası

Measurements from conventional, digital and CT-derived cephalograms: a comparative study

ASLI BAYSAL

Objective: The purpose of this retrospective radiographic study was to determine the reliability and reproducibility of skeletal and dental measurements of lateral cephalograms created from a computerised tomography (CT) scan compared with conventional and digital lateral cephalograms. Methods: CT and conventional lateral cephalograms of the same patients were obtained from university archives. The lateral cephalometric radiographs of 30 patients were manually traced. The radiographs were subsequently scanned and traced using Dolphin Imaging software version 11 (Dolphin Imaging, Chatswort ...Daha fazlası

Ethnic differences in dentofacial relationships of Turkish and Saudi young adults with normal occlusions and well-balanced faces

TANCAN UYSAL

Objectives: The aims of the present study were (1) to determine ethnic differences in craniofacial dimensions between Turkish and Saudi populations and (2) to identify possible gender differences between males and females, based on a sample of untreated young adult subjects with normal occlusions and well-balanced faces. Methods: In total, 163 cephalometric radiographs were traced and evaluated to compare untreated adults of Turkish and Saudi ethnicity. The Turkish group comprised 86 subjects; 45 females and 41 males. The Saudi group comprised 77 subjects; 39 females and 38 males. For st ...Daha fazlası

Comparison of craniofacial morphology, head posture and hyoid bone position with different breathing patterns

TANCAN UYSAL

Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate differences in craniofacial morphology, head posture and hyoid bone position between mouth breathing (MB) and nasal breathing (NB) patients. Methods: Mouth breathing patients comprised 34 skeletal Class I subjects with a mean age of 12.8 ± 1.5 years (range: 12.0–15.2 years). Thirty-two subjects with skeletal Class I relationship were included in the NB group (mean 13.5 ±1.3 years; range: 12.2–14.8 years). Twenty-seven measurements (15 angular and 12 linear) were used for the craniofacial analysis. Additionally, 12 measurements were evalu ...Daha fazlası

Effect of resveratrol on bone formation in the expanded inter-premaxillary suture: early bone changes

TANCAN UYSAL

Objective –The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of local resveratrol (RSVL) administration on bone formation in response to expansion of the interpremaxillary suture, in rats. Material and Methods – Twenty 50- to 60-day-old male Wistar rats were separated into two equal groups. Both groups were subjected to expansion, and 30 cN of force was applied to the maxillary incisors with helical-spring. Twenty-four hours after appliance placement, single-dose 10 lmol ⁄ kg RSVL in the dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) was injected to the inter-premaxillary suture in the experimental group. In ...Daha fazlası

Influence of soft drinks on dental enamel: An in vitro study

EBRU KÜÇÜKYILMAZ | | | |

This in vitro study was to evaluate the erosive potential of four soft drinks at different times on bovine teeth by profilometry. Bovine incisors buccal side was sectioned with a diamond saw and a total of 100 enamel blocks were prepared (8 × 4 × 0.5 mm). Five specimens each were exposed to 60 ml of soft drinks (Sprite, Coca Cola, Cappy-orange and Ayran) for 15, 30, 60, 120 and 180 minutes in a continuously vibrating soft drinks bath in a beaker at room temperature. Surface loss of the specimens was determined with a profilometry. The data were analyzed by two-way analysis of variance and Tuke ...Daha fazlası

Treatments of horizontal root fractures: four case reports

EBRU KÜÇÜKYILMAZ

Horizontal root fractures are rare in comparison to other types of injuries and the reported prevalence in the literature is between 0.5% and 7%. The treatment and prognosis of root fractures depend on many variables, the most important being the length of time between trauma and treatment, degree of dislocation and mobility, site of fracture, fixation period, stage of root development, age of patient, and quality of treatment. The ideal healing type is hard tissue healing. The aim of these case reports is to present four different patients who had horizontal root fractures of imma ...Daha fazlası
